Savage M1918 Aircraft Lewis at the Range (With Rare Tripod Mount!)
Cool Forgotten Weapons merch!
Yesterday we looked at the Savage M1918 aircraft version of the Lewis gun, used by American aviators during World War One. Today, we are taking it out to the range along with a very scarce original tripod mounting adapter.
I was not expecting all that much from the gun, but it is really tremendously enjoyable to shoot. The swiveling mount really makes one feel like a vintage aviator, dueling Fokkers over the trenches. Interestingly, the rate of fire was almost identical to that of a standard ground Lewis we had out the same day, despite the muzzle brake intended to increase the rate of fire. Whether that is due to ammunition or some other factor, I do not know.

I don't believe the sight is to have the shooter adjust for wind. I think rather the front site adjusts for the direction the aircraft is moving that the gun is mounted on. The vane will make the front sight point into the wind which makes the barrel shoot behind where the gunner aims. If the shooter aims gun out to the side of the aircraft, the bullet is already traveling the same speed as the aircraft in the same direction before the gun is shot, the shooter needs to shoot behind the an assumed stationary target to hit it, rather than leading the target. That is what this sight seems to help the shooter do.

Looking at the lewis gun, I can't figure out WHY haven't they developed a potent belt-fed universal mg on the base of it. It would've required minimal changes, as it almost has a belt feeding mechanism, very close to it. And the system has all the provisions to go the further steps in turning the lewis gun into a possible mg34/42 competitor. And the Brits chose to make BRENs instead(?!) Any suggestions?
