When I started building my tool box after moving out on my own one of the first things I bought was duct tape. Grant it, it was probably way before Guerrilla tape was available. I was surprised at how many side issues I had to deal with when I used it, like it not being as strong as expected, the residue... So glad you made this video and it's not just me. However, there is still a roll of duct tape in my tool bag...just in case... 😂

For those who do like and use duct tape, if you can ever get your hands on some army surplus, dark green duct tape, get as many rolls as they will let you have. That stuff works better than any duct tape you can get from a store. The adhesive works great and is very strong. P.S. If you have trouble getting it off the roll, just microwave it for a few seconds, works like a charm.

I used to be very pro-duct tape, until I worked for this one company that put on road races (marathons & 5ks and such). And they used 3M's 3903 vinyl tape for everything. It's incredible. Sometimes it's marketed as duct tape but it's not the same at all. It peels off completely clean, it has small parallel ridges so it's way easier to tear with your fingers, it comes in every color of the rainbow, you can write on it and it doesn't smear as much as duct tape, and it sticks pretty well to things that are dusty or dirty or cold. It's not that much more expensive than ordinary duct tape and you can get it at basically any home depot (or similar) store. Fantastic for labeling stuff, warehouse or pantry organization, color coding things, and anything outdoors. I would never go back duct tape. But I'm curious now how it compares to gaffer tape.

i think its kind of like the pocket knife multitool of tape, if you look at any one job it does it poorly, and in any one category its out classed by tools made to do only that job, but the value comes from the fact it can do alot of jobs while being only a single item/product, poorly granted but its worth it if you place alot of value on minimizing the number of tools and items you keep around, if you dont place a big emphasis on minimize number of tools you store then its kind of a raw deal

I am so glad someone shares my hatred of duct tape. The 100's of hours i've spent cleaning the residue from duct tape is unreal. I work with someone who is the exact opposite. You could have the exact right tape in your hand, he will go grab the duct tape. The one good thing about duct tape is that its available EVERYWHERE. On a jobsite and need to baidaid yourself somewhere? theres likely some duct tape at the village gas station. That being said, my favorite brand of duct tape is 3m brand. I find that 3m make a good product for just about everything. They are rarely the best. But they are a known good.

In my experience the only thing I have found (certain brands of) duct tape to be actually good at is for patching tarps. Mainly because if a tarp tears it’s time is limited and duct tape is a finite product to begin with. As a survival product it is a wonderful item as well because it actually can seal some fairly severe wounds. Just don’t pull it off. Leave that to the medical professionals.

  40. Benny Ryan

So, the original Duct Tape (the grey stuff) is terrible, for all the reasons Adam has said. However, Gorilla tape is something I can get on board with. Still crude, gummy and not easy to work with. But for certain applications I have found the durability to be fantastic. Years ago, I had a little run in with a pallet of rock salt with my car during the winter. Ironically sliding on ice into the pallet of rock salt. I punched a basketball size whole into my frozen bumper. I picked up all 9 pieces, brought then back home, grabbed a roll of black Gorilla tape and put the puzzle back together. This car was a commuter car and nothing fancy, so didn't care about the aesthetics of the bumper. For 3 years before I finally got rid of the car that tape held up through 2 more winters, 3 summers, hundreds of car washes, rainstorms, etc. and never once did the color fade, nor did the tape rot, or did I need to replace a strip. That stuff is ridiculous. I keep a roll of that in my utility tape quiver at all times. Now, of course, I do agree 100% with Adam. There are specific tapes for specific projects and applications, and I would stick with those before using Duct Tape to fix or bind. But overall, super impressed with the durability of the Gorilla Tape.

Almost every time I've used Gorilla tape the glue was garbage. I think it expires, or they have some QC problems. I use Tuck Tape a lot. They have a clear version that is like packing tape on steroids. Better tensile strength then duct tape, adhesive in easily 3 times as strong, really doesn't want to come off anything. It can leave a residue if you can get it off, but more like packing tape than the gooey junk on duct tape. Tuck tape also makes an aluminized tape, which is way more flexible and doesn't need a backing.

Kapton tape, Gaf tape, mask tape, aluminium tape, copper tape, double-sided tape - it's all the same product, just tailored to a given use-case. A sticky ribbon very similar to duct tape is used to tape carpets to the floor here in Europe, but duct tape leaves less residue.

There is 1 thing that duct tape is the best for - horse hoof wraps. Put enough layers of it together on to the bottom of the foot and it keeps water out, medications in, and prevents the horse from punching through the wrap while wearing it. That said, the Gorilla brand tape is still the literal best - two layers of that can keep a wrap intact for 48 hours. You have to use 5-6 layers of regular duct tape for the same results. Anything more expensive or better quality of tape than Gorilla tape is not worth it, since you have to throw the wrap away in the end.

Duct Tape for me and proud of it. Duct Tape is more flexible, so you can get a MUCH tighter seal. Duct Tape is waterproof whereas Gaffer Tape is merely water resistant. Gaffer Tape may be better in the heat - but you need to be dealing with the Entertainment Industry or something comparable for that to matter. Ordinary household/outdoors level heat isn't really going to be a problem. Sure, if you work with spotlights and such, then Gaffer Tape is the thing for you, but how many of us really work in that environment? Gaffer Tape is designed to be temporary, whereas Duct Tape is designed to be permanent or at least semi-permanent. Duct Tape, is MUCH more resistant to wind and weather - I would never use Gaffer Tape outdoors. And the worst part about Gaffer Tape is that it costs 3 times as much as Duct Tape.

The aluminum tape can be form fitted extremely well and stay in shape a lot more reliably than other tapes. So true, you are better off to purchase a tape for a certain purpose, than to rely on shitty duct tape. Farmers LOVE duct tape and I am slowly converting everybody to aluminum tape for stationary, nonmoving areas to seal or repair and Gorilla tape for places where parts move. Like sealing door hinges etc. I carry both types with me, to seal off header leaks, grain tank gaps, augers that are wore through....etc....Never used gaffer tape, but I shall buy some!
